Hojjat Haqverdi’s move to Johor Darul Ta’zim falls through

Azerbaijan national team defender Hojjat Haqverdi’s latest attempt has fallen through.

Idman.biz, citing Sportinfo.az, reports that the Iran-born player, who had the option to continue his career in Asia, was unable to agree to an offer from Malaysia.

Local champions Johor Darul Ta’zim had extended an invitation to him. The club, which competed in last season’s AFC Champions League, planned to offer Haqverdi a 1+1 year contract.

However, the parties could not reach an agreement on financial terms. Haqverdi requested an annual salary close to $190,000, which stalled negotiations.

The 32-year-old defender, who wore the Neftchi jersey over the past 2.5 years, would have joined a familiar teammate in the Malaysian club. Eddy Israfilov, who played alongside him at Neftchi and the national team, has been with Johor Darul Ta’zim for over a year.
