One of Qarabag’s summer signings is Joni Montiel. His agent, Mikel Alvaro Salazar, who once played in Azerbaijan as a foreign player, played an important role in bringing him to the Agdam club. In an interview with Sportal.az, Alvaro spoke about Montiel.
Do you believe Montiel will become Qarabag’s new star?
I believe he can be a very important player for Qarabag because he has a very high-quality playing performance. On top of that, he has very powerful shots. In time, you will see everything.
How did the move to Qarabag happen? Has the club been interested in him for a long time?
Qarabag had been following Montiel for several seasons. When I learned that Qarabag was looking for a player for this position, I contacted Joni and told him all the good things about the project and what life in Baku is like. He listened to me and agreed to sign with Qarabag.
What are Montiel’s strengths?
He has an excellent ability to build relationships with his teammates, great final passes, and impressive shots.
Joni has played for clubs like Rayo Vallecano, Deportivo, Levante, and Valladolid. Do you consider his move to Qarabag a step forward? Presumably, he chose this to play in the Champions League?
By the age of 26, he has played for many clubs and made his debut at a very young age. I consider his move to Qarabag a very important step in his career. I told him the same thing. He has joined a championship team that will play in Europe, and I hope they will make it to the Champions League. That means a lot to Joni.
If Montiel proves himself, will Qarabag likely want more players from you? Is Montiel a test for your collaboration with Qarabag?
Working with Qarabag is very pleasant. They made everything very easy for us by giving us all the opportunities, and I hope this will be the first of many deals between us.
