Qarabag’s new signing Joni Montiel turned down offers from several clubs before coming to Azerbaijan.
Idman.biz, citing Sportal.az, reports that the Spanish midfielder received official offers from Beitar (Israel) and Aris (Limassol, Cyprus).
However, the 26-year-old winger rejected those proposals, as well as others from Spain’s second division, in favor of joining the Azerbaijani club.
Montiel chose Qarabag due to the club’s consistent performances in European competitions and its playing style.
The player signed a 2+2 year contract and will wear the number 9 jersey for Qarabag.
The 26-year-old left winger is a product of Rayo Vallecano’s academy and joined the first team in 2015. Over his 10 years at the club, he was loaned out to Toledo, Deportivo La Coruna, Oviedo, Valladolid, Levante, and Burgos. He has also represented Spain at U-17, U-18, and U-19 levels.
Prior to Montiel, Qarabag had already signed Dani Bolt, Pedro Bicalho, Chris Kouakou, and Samy Mmaee.
