“Neftchi” showed character and fought until the end in their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round match against “Fomget” (Turkiye).
This was stated by the head coach of the capital’s women’s football team, Siyasat Asgarov, in an interview with the club’s press service, Idman.biz reports.
The specialist noted that the opponent had significantly strengthened since he previously coached the Turkish club: “I knew the opponent well because I had worked at ‘Fomget’ before. However, almost half of the team was renewed, and the squad had strengthened considerably. Many of the new players were members of strong national women’s teams. Moreover, the opponent had not played any matches during this preparation period, so what surprise awaited us was uncertain. Nevertheless, we chose a game plan appropriate to the opponent’s strength and prepared as much as possible. We wanted to punish the opponent without conceding a goal. I believe our team showed character and fought until the end. Unfortunately, at certain times, the opponent’s quality surfaced and forced us to make mistakes. After those mistakes, we conceded goals. We also had chances. I think the main reason for not capitalizing on the chances is that the squad consists mostly of young players. I believe the team can show better results in the future.”
The “Fomget” – “Neftchi” match, held in Tirana, Albania, ended with a 2-0 victory for the Turkish club.
