Arsenal have set a new world record in women’s football transfers by agreeing a fee in excess of £1 million to sign forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool. The 20-year-old Canada international’s move is subject to a medical and personal terms agreement.
Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that Smith joined Liverpool from Sporting CP last summer for just over £200,000 and scored seven goals in 20 Women’s Super League appearances in her debut season. She has also earned 18 caps for Canada, scoring four times.
Liverpool, who finished seventh last season, plan to reinvest the record transfer fee to strengthen their squad. Arsenal recently added Chloe Kelly and Taylor Hinds to their squad, making their attacking options even stronger.
Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen praised the signing, calling it a major investment in Arsenal’s bid to reclaim the WSL title and deepen their Champions League-winning squad.+
