Switzerland reached the Women’s European Championship quarter-finals for the first time in their history after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Finland on Thursday.
Idman.biz, citing Reuters, reports that Riola Xhemaili’s 92nd-minute equaliser sent the Swiss players and fans into celebration, sealing their place in the knockout stage.
"It's a historic moment for the whole of Switzerland. We're showing the whole world what Swiss people can do... it's magical," Xhemaili told Reuters after the match.
As hosts of the tournament, the Swiss only needed a point to progress, and Xhemaili delivered in style with a clutch finish in stoppage time. The late goal ensured they finished second in the group and advanced beyond the group stage for the first time in the competition's history.
