Former Iceland national team coach: "The Azerbaijan team could surprise us in their game"

"I believe that the games between the national teams of Iceland and Azerbaijan will be intense."

In an exclusive interview with AZERTAC, Arnar Vidarsson, who served as the head coach of the Iceland national team from 2020 to 2023, shared his thoughts on the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Azerbaijan, Idman.biz reports.

He pointed out that the Iceland national team has more experience in international tournaments: "Our physical strength, team play, and the experience our players have gained in Europe's top clubs give us a major advantage over our opponents. However, I think the Azerbaijan team, under the leadership of Portuguese coach Fernando Santos, could surprise Iceland in their matches. Because in football, anything is possible."

Currently working as the Sports Director at Belgium's Gent club, the 47-year-old coach also named players from the Azerbaijan team who caught his eye: "I would especially highlight team captain Emin Mahmudov, as well as forwards Ramil Şeydayev and Mahir Emreli. They are players who make a difference in the national team."

The Azerbaijan national team will play its first match against Iceland away on September 5 and will host them at home on November 13.
