Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal, and teammates miss World Cup for the third time

In the 16th round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chile lost 0–2 to Bolivia.

This defeat means that the team featuring Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal has lost its chance to qualify for the World Cup and will miss the tournament for the third time in a row, Idman.biz reports.

After 16 matches, Chile has only 10 points and sits at the bottom, 10th place, in the standings.

In the South American zone, the top six teams qualify directly for the World Cup, while the 7th-place team enters an intercontinental playoff.

As for Chile, while the team reached the Round of 16 at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, it has failed to finish higher than 6th place in the qualifiers for the next three editions:

2018 World Cup: 6th place

2022 World Cup: 7th place

2026 World Cup: 10th place

In these three qualifying campaigns, Chile earned only 55 points out of a possible 156 — a success rate of just 35%.
