“We fought until the end.”
These were the words of Namiq Alasgarov, midfielder of Sabah FC, in a statement to Idman.biz following his team’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Qarabag in the final of the Azerbaijan Cup.
Reflecting on the match, the 30-year-old said:
“The league didn’t go well for us, so the cup was our main hope. We had been preparing for this game for a long time. From the start, we said that no matter the score, we’d fight until the end. That’s exactly what we did. Scoring in the final seconds proves our determination. Winning the cup was our goal — and we achieved it.”
When asked about Qarabag’s complaints regarding refereeing, Alasgarov declined to comment:
“It wouldn’t be right for me to say anything about that.”
With his contract set to expire at the end of June, the midfielder admitted that his focus has been solely on the cup final:
“I’ve been so focused on preparing for the final that I haven’t had time to think about a new contract. I’ll start considering it now.”
Sabah FC won the club's first major title in history, with the match going into extra time after a 2–2 draw in regular time. The decisive winning goal came in the 119th minute, sealing a historic triumph.
