"Players who sit on the bench at their clubs won’t be called up to the national team."
This was announced by the head coach of the Azerbaijan national football team, Fernando Santos, during today’s press conference, Idman.biz reports.
Santos emphasized that players selected for the national team must be actively playing for their clubs:
“It’s one thing to play 10–15 minutes; it’s another to just sit on the bench. I respect every coach’s decision, but anyone invited to the national team must be consistently playing. Moreover, we don’t have a large pool of players to choose from. I’d like to see more Azerbaijani players getting regular playing time. Let’s wait for next season. New clubs will join the league, and hopefully, players will have more chances to prove themselves.”
Azerbaijan will face Latvia on June 7 at Skonto Stadium in Riga, and Hungary on June 10 at Liv Bona Dea Arena in Baku in upcoming friendly matches.
