Cagliari’s starting goalkeeper Elia Caprile will not feature in the starting lineup for the final Serie A match of the season against Napoli.
According to Cronache della Campania, Idman.biz reports that the coaching staff has made the decision amid concerns that Caprile may have a vested interest in Cagliari’s defeat.
If Napoli wins the match, Caprile—who is officially a Napoli player—will be eligible to receive a Serie A winner’s medal for the first time in his career.
Caprile joined Cagliari on loan in January and played the first half of the season with Napoli, making four appearances in Serie A. Under league rules, this is enough for him to be considered part of the title-winning squad if Napoli clinches the championship.
With this in mind, there are suspicions that Caprile might lack full motivation against his parent club, prompting the coaching team to take precautionary measures by benching him.
