Georgia coach Kakhaber Maisaia: "Returning to Baku as head coach is exciting and emotional"

Ahead of the WMF World Cup, Georgia national team head coach Kakhaber Maisaia spoke to Sportal.az about their preparations, expectations, and his emotional return to Baku.

– How has the Georgian national team prepared for the World Cup? Are there any concerns?

We’ve prepared well for the World Cup. Our squad is young, but we also have some experienced players. It’s a very interesting team, and we’re ready to compete with any opponent.

– Are there any former professional footballers in your squad?

Most of them are active players. Some come from futsal, and two of them have experience in 11-a-side professional football.

– You played in Azerbaijan for many years. Now you’re back in Baku...

Yes, after Tbilisi, Baku feels like a second home to me. I love this city and always miss it. I still maintain friendships from my playing days in Azerbaijan. Coming back to Baku as a head coach is very special and emotional for me.

– What is Georgia’s main goal in this tournament? Do you see the championship as a realistic target?

We aim to go as far as possible. We have a young and ambitious team, and we’ll fight until the end against every opponent. We respect all teams, but I believe there’s no opponent we can’t beat.

– What are your thoughts on the host nation, Azerbaijan? They’ve made strides in minifootball since becoming European champions.

Everyone knows how strong Azerbaijan is. It’s impressive how quickly minifootball has developed there. After Georgia, I’ll be cheering for Azerbaijan with all my heart.

– Who do you see as the tournament favorite?

Azerbaijan is definitely one of the top contenders, especially with the home advantage. I think the whole of Azerbaijan will support Georgia too, because our countries have always had strong, friendly ties. I wish both Azerbaijan and Georgia the best of luck.

– Georgia is in Group G alongside Czech Republic, UAE, and Argentina. How do you rate your chances of advancing?

Of course, we believe we have a chance to progress. We’re analyzing all our opponents and will do our best on the pitch. God willing, everything will go well.
