Agaselim Mirjavadov: “They were wrong once—If they want to be wrong again, let them try”

“We’ve needed to prioritize local coaches since 1993. The best results in our clubs have always come from local managers. We need to believe in them.”

These were the words of Agaselim Mirjavadov, member of the Coaches Committee, in a statement to Sport24.az, Idman.biz reports.

The experienced coach emphasized the importance of trusting domestic managers:

“Unfortunately, club executives still don’t trust locals. The difference between a local and a foreign coach is like night and day. Take Sumgayit, for example—they brought in Aleksey Baga. What did they achieve? Nothing. They were wrong once. If they want to be wrong again, let them go ahead and hire another. Foreign coaches often switch between 25 clubs in 15 years. I’m not against hiring a foreigner—but they must be high quality. Right now, we have very capable local specialists.”

Mirjavadov also defended Vagif Javadov, a young coach who recently parted ways with his club:

“Vagif was hardworking and eager to learn—he even said so in interviews. That’s a good quality. I would’ve liked to see him continue under the mentorship of a strong head coach to gain more experience before taking over a team himself. But only if people actually believe in him. Vagif has the right character. He’ll become a great coach.”

Notably, Vagif Javadov’s contract—originally signed for 2.5 years last year—was terminated by mutual agreement.
