Zamig Aliyev, who won the Albanian league title with Egnatia, spoke to Report about his championship experience.
– You’ve become a champion in Albania with Egnatia. How does it feel?
– It’s hard to put into words. It was truly an incredible moment. To wrap up my first European season with two trophies was a wonderful experience. Raising the Azerbaijani flag in another country feels amazing.
– Did you believe you’d have another successful season, just like last year?
– Absolutely, we believed it. This season we were determined to win the gold medals. Thank God we managed to defend our title. Not becoming champions would have been a surprise to us.
– Several Azerbaijani players have played in the Albanian league but often left their clubs dissatisfied. Why do you think that happens?
– Honestly, it’s hard to say. You’d have to be there to know the exact reasons.
– If we compare the Albanian league with the Misli Premier League, what differences do you notice?
– First of all, there isn’t a huge gap between the two leagues. Some people think the Albanian league is weaker than the Premier League, but I disagree. In Albania, the game is more physical and intense, while in Azerbaijan it’s more technical. Also, stadiums in Azerbaijan are better. That’s what I’ve noticed, but I can’t say one league is significantly better than the other.
– The Albanian season has ended. What are your future plans?
– I signed a 3-year contract with Egnatia, so I’m still under contract.
– Are you thinking about playing for other European clubs?
– Of course, I dream of playing in bigger leagues. I believe, in time, I’ll achieve that goal.
– Is there a chance you’ll return to Azerbaijan?
– Not at the moment. All my plans are focused on continuing my career in Europe. Hopefully, things will go as planned. It feels great to represent Azerbaijan in European clubs. Living abroad as a footballer suits me well. I feel more comfortable in Europe.
– Many players return shortly after moving to European clubs. Why do you think that is?
– There could be several reasons. Naturally, they know best. It wouldn’t be right for me to speak on their behalf. It’s better if those players answer that question themselves.
– Your performances for Egnatia have caught the attention of national team coach Fernando Santos. Can we expect to see you in the next squad?
– We’ll have to wait for the squad announcement. I believe I’ll be on that list. Representing the national team is a great honor.
