Former Galatasaray player Umit Karan imprisoned

Former Galatasaray forward Umit Karan has been released on probation.

Karan had been accused of “simple sexual assault.”

Former Galatasaray forward Umit Karan was acquitted by the Bakirkoy Criminal Court of First Instance on charges of “simple sexual assault” against a female security guard at his residence in 2015. However, since the case was appealed, the Regional Court of Justice sentenced him to imprisonment.

The Court of Cassation upheld the 1 year and 8 month prison sentence for the 48-year-old football veteran.

In line with the confirmed sentence, Karan appeared at Bakirkoy Courthouse today and was transferred to Metris Prison.

Umit Karan played 10 matches and scored 3 goals for the Turkish national team between 1999 and 2007, and he also won the national championship three times with Galatasaray.
