Vagif Javadov appointed assistant coach of Azerbaijan U-20 side

The Azerbaijan national under-20 football team have confirmed a new addition to their coaching staff, with Vagif Javadov appointed as assistant coach, Idman.Biz reports.

The decision was announced by AFFA, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the development pathway for young players in the national system.

Javadov brings significant experience from his playing career, having featured for several clubs in Azerbaijan including Qarabag, Baku, Keşlə (now Shamakhi), Khazar Lankaran, Gabala, Sumgayit and AZAL. He also spent time abroad with Twente in the Netherlands, Volga in Russia, and Gaziantep BB and Boluspor in Turkey. At international level, he earned 58 caps for the senior Azerbaijan national team between 2006 and 2014, scoring nine goals.

After retiring, Javadov moved into coaching in 2020, beginning with youth roles at Sumgayit before taking charge of Sumgayit-2 as head coach. He later stepped up to lead the senior team during the second half of the 2024/2025 season, as well as gaining brief experience abroad with Turan in Kazakhstan.

His appointment reflects AFFA’s strategy of integrating former internationals into youth development structures, with the aim of building a stronger pipeline for the senior national team in the coming years.
