Stadiums for the 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup in Azerbaijan identified

A preliminary list of stadiums in Azerbaijan that will host matches of the 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup has been identified.

According to Idman.Biz, citing prosport.az, matches of the tournament are planned to take place in Baku, Sumgayit, Ganja, Gabala, and Khankendi. In the capital, the Baku Olympic Stadium and the Tofig Bahramov Stadium are being considered as the main venues. At the same time, an alternative to the Olympic Stadium is also being discussed, as its seating capacity may prove excessive for U-20 World Cup matches.

In Sumgayit, matches may be played at the Mehdi Huseynzade City Stadium, in Gabala at the city stadium, and in Ganja at the recently opened stadium, where work on the pitch is still ongoing. The city stadium in Khankendi is also planned to be used.

However, hosting matches in Khankendi remains in question due to the lack of reserve training fields. If such facilities are built, World Cup matches could also be held at this venue.

It is also noted that the Organizing Committee, established by a decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on December 15, includes the President’s special representative in Khankendi, Aghdara and Khojaly districts Elchin Yusubov, Head of the Ganja City Executive Authority Niyazi Bayramov, Head of the Gabala District Executive Authority Sabuhi Abdullayev, and Head of the Sumgayit City Executive Authority Zakir Farajov.

It should be recalled that on October 2, FIFA officially approved the hosting of the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. The tournament is expected to feature 24 teams, divided into six groups.
