Ecuadorian police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of footballer Mario Pineyda, according to ESPN.
The detained individuals have been brought before a court, which ordered their pre-trial detention.
Mario Alberto Pineyda Martinez, a 33-year-old defender for Barcelona SC, was killed in a shooting in the city of Guayaquil. During the attack, Pineyda’s wife was also killed, while his mother sustained injuries.
Pineyda began his professional career at Independiente del Valle before joining Barcelona Sporting Club’s first team in 2016. With the Guayaquil-based club, he won two national league titles. He also represented the Ecuador national team, taking part in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
