Why was Neftchi striker Aboubakar not called up to the Cameroon national team?

The scandal surrounding the Cameroon national football team continues to intensify.

As İdman.Biz reports, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto’o, did not include Neftchi forward Vincent Aboubakar in the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to multiple sources, Eto’o personally influenced the decision to exclude the striker. It is noted that the motive may be linked to Eto’o’s own national team record: Aboubakar, who has scored 45 goals, is the second-highest scorer in Cameroon’s history and could potentially surpass Eto’o’s record of 56.

Sources also report that last week Eto’o dismissed head coach Marc Brys and appointed David Pagou as his replacement. In the squad list announced by the new coach, both Aboubakar and goalkeeper André Onana were omitted.

The decision triggered discontent among fans and tension within the federation. Brys sharply criticized the leadership, calling the exclusion of veteran players “unbelievable” and unjustified.

FECAFOOT has not released an official statement yet.
