Today, Azerbaijan’s national team will face Iceland in the 2026 World Cup qualifying Group D match at the 8th km Settlement Stadium in Baku.
Idman.Biz reports that this will be the third encounter between the two teams. Their first meeting was a 1:1 draw in Reykjavik in 2008, while the second clash earlier this year saw Iceland claim a 5:0 victory. Notably, Hannes Halldorsson remains the only Icelandic player to have played in Azerbaijan, representing “Qarabag” in 2018/2019.
Iceland’s head coach Arnar Bergmann Gunnlaugsson has led his team since January, winning two national titles with “Vikingur,” while Azerbaijan is under the guidance of Aykhan Abbasov, who has over a decade of coaching experience. Both sides have a rich football history: Iceland’s national team was founded in 1947, while Azerbaijan played its first international match in 1992.
Recent form favors Iceland, but Azerbaijan will rely on home advantage and key players like Toral Bayramov and Emin Mahmudov. Kickoff is set for 21:00.
