Former Azerbaijani national team player Maksim Medvedev hopes the team will show a completely different performance in the World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Iceland.
The ex-captain believes the national team can achieve a good result:
“I think this match won’t resemble the first game against Iceland. In the first encounter, the team really played below its level. I’m sure they have analyzed the opponent and won’t repeat the same mistakes. I hope the players will perform with more confidence and determination, and we will see a completely different style of football. Aykhan Abbasov is capable of preparing the team and will work to ensure they achieve a better result and fight honorably. The national team must stay focused to play the football we want and get a good result. I believe they can do it,” he told Report news agency.
He also commented on which approach head coach Aykhan Abbasov might prioritize:
“I know Aykhan’s tactics, which players he selects, and how he prefers to organize the game. If they play as they did against Ukraine, it will be difficult for Iceland. If they move properly from defense to counterattack and create more goal-scoring opportunities, it will benefit us.”
The Azerbaijan vs Iceland match will take place tomorrow at 21:00 at the “8th km” settlement stadium.
