Villarreal has issued strong criticism toward La Liga following the cancellation of their Matchday 17 game against Barcelona, which had been scheduled to take place in the United States on December 20, Idman.Biz reports.
According to a statement on the club’s official website, the initiative to hold the match outside Spain originated from La Liga itself, and Villarreal agreed to participate, believing the project would benefit the development of the championship.
However, the organization of the event raised numerous questions, and the club repeatedly sought clarification. Representatives of Villarreal said they learned of the cancellation via a phone call on October 21, just minutes before the official announcement.
In its statement, Villarreal described La Liga’s actions as “a sign of disrespect and a failure in management.”
