Press Day chess showdown: media representatives compete in traditional tournament

On July 22, in honor of National Press Day, a chess tournament was held among media representatives, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation.

The competition took place at the Republican Chess Center and featured 21 media representatives, Idman.biz reports.

At the closing ceremony, Aqshin Farajov, head of department at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Elshan Mammadov, director of the Republican Chess Center, and sports journalist Sanan Shafizade congratulated media workers on the 150th anniversary of the National Press and wished them success in their work.

According to the regulations, the tournament was held in "A" and "B" groups, with each game lasting 5 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move. The top three players in each group received cash prizes and valuable gifts. In Group “B”, Kamran Haji and Sarkhan Musali shared 2nd-3rd places. Ilkin Khalilov took 1st place in Group “B” with 8 points from 9 games.

In Group “A”, Ilkin Vidadioglu finished third. Siyavush Aliyev came second, just half a point behind the leader. With 8.5 points in 10 rounds, Alikhan Babayev was crowned the winner of Group “A”.

During the closing ceremony, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Elshan Mammadov for his support in organizing the tournament.

The Azerbaijan Chess Federation traditionally organizes annual chess tournaments among journalists. This was the seventh edition of the event.
