More than 180 chess players to compete in Sheki Open

The Azerbaijan Chess Federation has started preparations for the second tournament of the Chess Tour Azerbaijan series.

The competition will take place in Sheki from June 18 to 25, Idman.biz reports.

So far, 37 players from seven countries have applied to participate in the Sheki Open A tournament. The rating favorite is Azerbaijani grandmaster Eltaj Safarli. Fellow Azerbaijani player Ahmad Ahmadzada is second on the starting list, followed by Ukraine’s Vitaliy Bernadskiy in third.

A total of 150 chess players have registered for the B tournament, which will feature rapid and blitz events.

Launched this year, the Chess Tour Azerbaijan consists of eight tournaments. The tour began with the Baku Open, which concluded two weeks ago.
