A scandal broke out at the European Schoolboys Boxing Championship held in Zlatibor, Serbia. During the bout between Azerbaijani athlete Yusif Aghakishiyev and Serbian boxer Viktor Majstorovic, technical director Khamza Avezov entered the ring in protest against the referee’s decisions.
Azerbaijani boxer Yusif Aghakishiyev spoke to “Qafqazinfo” about the incident, Idman.biz reports.
He stated that he faced injustice from the referee: “In the final match, I was up against a local athlete. I was better than my opponent and could have won the gold medal. But the referees made a different decision. I was treated unfairly. They took away my clear victory. My coach Khamza Avezov couldn’t bear it and entered the ring. That’s how the situation unfolded. I believe the reason behind the referees' decisions was that my opponent was local. There was cheating, and the win was handed to him.”
Aghakishiyev also emphasized that despite the protests, the referees gave no response: “There was a protest, but the referees gave no answer. They upheld their decision. This was the first time I had encountered something like this. Sometimes such things happen in boxing. Local athletes are given preferential treatment.”
