The "Absheron Lions" basketball team, which will represent Azerbaijan in the FIBA Europe Cup, will compete for a place in the group stage.
According to Idman.biz, the head coach of the Absheron side, Erhan Toker, told Report news agency that the team will face strong opponents: “We are very happy to be playing in Europe. We will fight to qualify for the group stage. We have strong opponents, but the group composition might change. Some clubs participating in the qualifiers are also playing in the Basketball Champions League. It would be better to comment once we reach the group stage. I also wish good luck to the other two Azerbaijani teams competing in European competitions – ‘Sabah’ and ‘Neftchi’.”
The coach noted that the squad is still being assembled: “The draw has been made, and our opponent is ‘Anorthosis’ of Cyprus. We want to advance with good performances. Currently, we are working on forming the team. As far as we know, the opponent has also not finalized its roster. We will play two matches. Since the team list is not yet complete, it is too early to say anything definite.”
Absheron Lions will face Cyprus’ Anorthosis in the first qualifying round of the FIBA Europe Cup. The winner of this tie will join Group H to face Casademont Zaragoza (Spain), Falco (Hungary), and Bakken Bears (Denmark).
The qualifying round matches of the FIBA Europe Cup will take place on September 24 and October 1.
