“We want to be champions and represent our country in European competitions,” said Amil Hamzayev, captain of Neftchi Basketball Club, in an interview with AZERTAC following their qualification for the Azerbaijan Basketball League finals.
Idman.biz reports that reflecting on their semifinal victory against Absheron, Hamzayev praised the opposition’s performance:
“Although not considered favorites, Absheron showed strong character. Their young Azerbaijani players put up a good fight. The first game was especially tough—we benefited from the opponent’s mistake and a bit of luck at the end. The second match was comparatively easier for us.”
The national team captain also explained Neftchi’s rocky start to the season:
“Poor early transfers affected us. Five foreign players were released, and it took time to adjust to their replacements. We started with six losses, but then won 11 of our next 14 matches. If we had found our rhythm earlier, our regular season ranking would’ve been better. Still, third place got us into the playoffs.”
Looking ahead to the final against Sabah, Hamzayev shared his expectations:
“This will be my third time facing Sabah in the finals—previously with Ganja and Khazri. They have a solid squad and coaching staff and have represented Azerbaijan well in Europe. It won’t be easy, but our goal is to win the title and compete in European Cups.”
The first game of the final series between Sabah and Neftchi will take place on May 2 at the Baku Sports Palace.
