Ioannis Diamantakos has been appointed head coach of the Azerbaijan women's national basketball team and coordinator of the country's women's national teams across all age categories.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation (ABF) announced that it has signed a two-year contract with the Greek specialist.
Diamantakos most recently served as head coach of Saudi Arabian club AlUla.
The Greek coach previously worked as technical coordinator at the Lebanese Basketball Federation and was in charge of Lebanon's senior women's national team as well as the country's U18 boys' and girls' teams. He has also coached the Palestine men's senior national team and Romania's U20 side.
At club level, Diamantakos has worked in Greece, Romania, Palestine and Saudi Arabia.
His coaching achievements include silver medals in Division B of the FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup and the U18 WABA Championship, a Palestinian Basketball League title and two league championships in Greece. He has also guided teams to the last eight of the FIBA Europe Cup and achieved a fifth-place finish at the FIBA U20 European Championship.
In addition to his basketball career, Diamantakos holds a PhD in psychology, bringing an academic and scientific perspective to his coaching and leadership work.
His first major objective with the Azerbaijan senior women's team will be to produce a competitive performance in the preliminary qualifiers for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2029, scheduled for November 2026 and February 2027.
The campaign is also expected to provide valuable experience ahead of the FIBA U16, U18 and U20 Women's European Championships in the summer of 2027.
