Sabah defender Aden McCarthy makes Champions League history

Sabah defender Aden McCarthy has achieved a historic milestone in the UEFA Champions League.

As reported by İdman.Biz, citing South African publication The South African, the 22-year-old became the eighth South African-born footballer to score in the competition after finding the net against Borussia Dortmund.

The former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back made his third Champions League appearance in the match against the German side. Despite Sabah's 2-1 defeat, McCarthy scored his first goal for the Azerbaijani club.

Interestingly, the historic list also features another player with strong connections to Azerbaijani football. Former Qarabag striker Dino Ndlovu scored four goals in Champions League qualifying matches during his career.

According to the publication, the list of South African-born players who have scored in the competition is as follows:

1. Benni McCarthy – 8 goals
2. Dino Ndlovu – 4 goals
3. Steven Pienaar – 2 goals
4. Quinton Fortune – 2 goals
5. Bennett Mnguni – 1 goal
6. Nasief Morris – 1 goal
7. Thulani Serero – 1 goal
8. Aden McCarthy – 1 goal

McCarthy's achievement marks a significant personal milestone for the young defender, who has now added his name to South African football's Champions League history while representing Azerbaijan's Sabah.
